Medial?
[edit]Are central consonants ever referred to as "medial"? This article used to give that as an alternative name: the mention was added by Gwalla in 2004 [1] and removed by Keithjohnson berkeley in 2012 [2], though there remained the corresponding entry at the dab page Medial. This meaning of "medial" isn't found in any of the dictionaries I consulted, and I'm having trouble locating any use on the web. Has anyone seen it used like that? – Uanfala (talk) 05:47, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
- I don't know about medial, but median certainly seems to have some users. See e.g. Routledge Dictionary of Language and Linguistics (2006, p. 736). The second edition of Phonetic Symbol Guide also adopts the term and even explains the decision in the preface (p. xxxiv):
Nardog (talk) 07:03, 29 January 2018 (UTC)the term median has been substituted for central wherever it refers to the defining property of nonlateral consonants ... leaving central to refer unambiguously to the halfway point in the front/back vowel quality dimension
